Chapter 13

Sarah said...

"Hey, Lor!" I heard Jordan call out. I stopped walking and waited for him. "You wanna go to a movie or something tonight?" He asked.
"I'm actually busy. How is tomorrow?" I said.
"Okay. Sounds great." He said smiling.
I giggled. I walked over to where Kim was parked waiting for us. I peaked in the window. "I'm getting dinner with a guy from school. He'll take me home after." I told her.
She sighed and looked forward. She just nodded.
"I won't be late. I promise." I said.
"I trust you." She smiled.
"Bye!" I said.
"Wait!" She said digging through her purse. "I got you girls cell phones today. You're is pink. Carla's is blue."
"Thank you." I said while she handed it to me.
"The number is on a sticker on the back of it." She said. "Put it in your pocket or something."
"I will." I smiled.
"Call if you need anything. I already programmed all of our numbers." She said.
"Okay." I said. "See you in a couple hours."
I went running towards the gym to wait for Darren.
"Hey you." I said when I saw him walking my way. A big herd of guys came out of the double doors to the gym.
"So, did I get the Barney song stuck in your head?" He said smiling.
"Yes! I was singing it all day!" I giggled.
He just smiled. He was shy. My goal was to get him talking.
"So, any plans for college next year?" I asked.
"I was thinking Harvard maybe." He said.
"Impressive." I said.
He smiled and turned away blushing. I giggled.
"Here's my car." He said. It was a Dodge Ram. It looked really nice. I didn't notice a single nick in the body. He opened the passenger door for me and I hopped in. He closed the door and walked around.
"Sorry." He said getting in.
"For what?" I asked.
"I've never done this before. I've never even had a girl in my car before. Besides my mother, but she doesn't count." He said.
I shrugged giggling. He turned the key and we headed out.
"So, tell me about yourself." I said.
"What do you want to know?" He asked.
"Actually. I think I might know a girl you'd like." I said thinking of Laura.
"What? Who?" He asked.
"I'll point her out to you at school tomorrow." I said.
"What's her name?" He asked.
"Laura something." I said.
"Laura Dorka Big Fat Bo-borka?" He asked.
"What the hell?" I laughed. "I don't know. She isn't fat though."
"Skinny, big glasses?" He asked.
I nodded. "You know her?"
"No thank you." He said.
"I thought you two might have something in common." I said.
"We have NOTHING in common." He said. He sounded a little hurt.
"Oh." I said.
There was an awkward silence. "I'm sorry." I said.
He sighed. "I'm use to it."
"Use to what?" I asked.
"I'm an outcast." He said.
"Okay, I'm gonna tell you one thing before you decide to be my friend." I said.
"Friend?" He asked.
"Yes, friend." I said.
He smiled.
"I don't hang out with people that are hard on themselves or looking for sympathy." I explained. "As soon as you start talking down about yourself, I'm outta here. I'll fucking walk home if I have to."
I looked at him and he was still smiling.
"Okay." He said.
"What are you smirking about over there?" I asked.
He just shook his head. "We're here." He said.
We got out of the truck and walked up to the restaurant. "Reservations for Hamlin." He said to the lady up front.
"You made reservations?" I asked, totally flattered.
"Yeah." He said smiling as if it were no big deal.
"Awww." I giggled. "That's really sweet."
The lady guided us to a table that was secluded and right next to the kitchen. It was so beautiful. A little dark with just enough light from a few candles lit in the middle of the table.
"Awww. Darren." I said looking at everything. I smiled. "Darren, this is the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me."
"Yeah right." He said.
"I'm serious." I told him.
He smiled.
"Now tell me more about you." I said.
He told me all about his older sister getting pregnant at the age of 14 and his big brother dying at the age of 23 during his first month in the marines. His father had passed as well of a brain aneurysm two years before. We had a big steak and potatos dinner. When they were preparing our desert, I began to tell him all about me.
"My father went ballistic on my Mom and stabbed her." I said. The words were hard to say. I hadn't even thought about that night for a long time.
"Holy shit." He said.
I looked at him shocked. I couldn't beleive cuss words had just come out of his mouth.
"Sorry." He said. "I don't even know what to say."
"It's okay." I said. "She died and we were sent to a home."
"Geez." He said. "I'm so sorry."
My eyes started to tear up. "I didn't even get to say goodbye to my Grandparents. I miss them so much." I said wiping my eyes.
He started to look really uncomfortable. They brought us our dessert and we both just ate there in silence for a few minutes.
"I'm sorry. I kind of ruined this nice dinner." I said smiling.
"Nah, you didn't ruin it." He said.
I took a deep breath. The image of my Father accusing my Mother of cheating on him with the young gardener, then stabbing her twice in the chest wouldn't stop running through my head over and over again. Her laying there on the kitchen floor with blood all over her. I was only five, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
"Well, there's no doubting I'll be having nightmares tonight." I said.
He put his hand over mine. "You can call me if you want. I mean if you can't sleep. If you want. . ." He said.
I smiled nodding. "I might have to take you up on that." I said.
He smiled.
"You know I can't beleive no girl has snagged you yet." I giggled.
"Yeah right." He said.
"I'm serious." I said. "Your eyes are so gorgeous."
He blushed as I stared deep into his eyes. I had never seen such pretty eyes before. I was really liking his hair with just that little bit of gel too. He dressed fine, at least when he wore a t-shirt. I wasn't digging the button up shirts. His jeans were hot though. All he had to do was lose the glasses.
"I guess we should head out." He said standing up. He stretched his arms out a little and I caught a slight glimpse of his stomach. I couldn't help but picture what he may look like under those clothes.
"Yeah." I smiled as I stood up.
