By time it was time for lunch, I realized I had nobody to sit with. I had no idea what time Aaron or Carla had lunch. I migrated to the cafeteria following a group of girls. One of them turned around and looked at me. "Cigar girl." She said. "That's you, right?"
This girl looked like a super model. Her hair was long and perfectly curled. She smiled.
"Yeah, I guess that's me." I said smiling.
"You on your way to lunch?" She asked.
I nodded.
"Do you want to join us?" She asked.
"Um, I. . ." I hesitated as I looked at the girls standing behind her. They were all gorgeous. I did not fit in with them.
"What up, Nat?" Jordan said walking over to her.
"Jordan?" I said.
He looked at me as he was about to put his arm around the girl, then pulled away placing his arm behind him. "Lor." He said.
I smiled.
"You know her?" The girl asked pointing to me.
"Aaron's sister." He said.
"Ooooh." She said. "Aaron's a two timer." She told me.
"Okay. . ." I giggled. I walked past them and decided I would have lunch alone. I bought a salad and a water, then sat down at a table outside. I picked at my salad a little and started reading my book, White Oleander.
"Mind if I sit here?" I heard a guy say.
I sighed and looked up. He was the dorkiest guy I had ever seen in my life. He was actually wearing a pocket protector. I never in a million years thought anyone actually wore one of those.
"No. Go right ahead." I smiled.
"Thank you." He said looking nervous. He just sat there staring at me. I looked back down and continued to read.
"I think you're in my math class." He said with a shaky voice.
"Cool." I said smiling. I closed my book and put it back in my backpack. I noticed his eyes. They were beautiful. A very light blue.
"You should get contacts." I told him. "Your eyes are amazing."
"What?" He asked swallowing hard.
I shrugged. "Just a suggestion."
He looked down at his lap.
"I've never actually seen someone with a pocket protector." I said looking at it.
"I don't like when the ink gets on my clothes." He said.
"Maybe you should keep the pens in your book bag." I said.
"But then they aren't easy. . . access. . " He said looking down at his pocket. He pulled his pens out and set them down on the table. He pulled the pocket protector out of his pocket and threw it into the trash can next to him. I laughed. "You don't have to do what I say." I said.
He smirked blushing as he put his pens in the front pocket of his backpack. The first bell rang warning us we had 5 more minutes to get to class. I stood up. "I'd lose the grease in your hair too. It's a bit much." I said smiling.
He smiled at me and looked back down at his lap. "See you around." I said and walked away to find my gym class. I ran into Carla on my way. It turned out, we both had gym class with the same teacher. I was excited to actually know someone in one of my classes.
"I saw her with Darren the Dweeb." A girl said pointing at me.
I looked around me confused. I just shrugged. The teacher passed out our uniforms and we all changed. My shorts were huge, so I rolled them up around the waist.
"Alright girls. Line up along the line here." Ms. Row shouted as she pointed her to the line on the side of the basketball court with her foot. She blew her whistle and shouted it again. We all lined up. I looked over and noticed Red was standing a few feet away from me.
"Watch out for her, she's a bitch." I whispered to Carla. I noticed the girl look at me, then turn away quickly. Ms. Row made us run around the court several times and then do twenty sit ups. I was surprised I was able to do them. Carla struggled and only made it to sixteen, but we lied and said she made it to twenty. After class, I had Yearbook. I wasn't thrilled that I was thrown into Yearbook, until I walked in and saw a really hot guy sitting on the counter next to the teacher. They were joking and laughing. The teacher looked young and she seemed really cool.
"You must be Loralai. I'm Mrs. Adams." She said smiling.
I smiled and nodded.
"I'm Toby." The guy said.
"Wow." I said under my breath as I took a seat at a table.
